How to Stop Your Mask from Fogging – The Right Way!

If your mask keeps fogging up, you’re not alone — it’s one of the most common frustrations for divers and snorkelers.
You might have tried toothpaste, defog sprays, or even the lighter trick (please don’t!). The truth is, most masks fog because new lenses have an invisible film left from the manufacturing process that needs to be removed properly.

At Wanderlust Dive Center Bonaire, we teach a simple, professional cleaning method that keeps your mask crystal-clear from your first dive onward.

Why New Masks Fog Up

During production, a thin layer of silicone oil coats the inside of the glass to prevent scratches. Unfortunately, that layer attracts condensation — the reason your mask fogs, no matter how much you spit or spray.

Until you remove that residue, fogging will continue to happen on every dive.

Why You Should Never Use a Lighter

You’ve probably seen videos of divers burning the inside of their mask lenses with a lighter to “clean” it. While it might appear effective, it’s risky and unnecessary.
This method can easily damage your mask — and it’s unsafe if not done perfectly.

At Wanderlust, we strongly advise against using any flame near your gear.

The Wanderlust Method: Toothbrush + Cleaning Paste

Here’s how we do it — the safe and effective way:

  1. Use a mild abrasive cleaning paste (like Soft Scrub or a similar non-gel cleaner).
  2. Apply it to the inside and outside of the lenses.
  3. Use an old toothbrush to gently scrub both the glass and the silicone skirts.
  4. Rinse thoroughly with fresh water and dry with a soft cloth.

This removes the silicone layer and prevents future fogging.
Repeat the process once or twice if needed — after that, you’re set for many dives.

Keep It Clean Before Every Dive

Before each dive, use a small amount of defog solution or even natural saliva (if you prefer old-school).
Rinse lightly and avoid touching the glass again — fingerprints cause new fogging spots.

At Wanderlust Dive Center, we always prep your rental masks using this same method, so every guest dives fog-free from the start.
